Hawaii's Earth Day community resolutions

To honor Earth Day this year Hawaii Health Guide asked members of our community to share their Earth Day resolutions and happenings in an effort to inspire others to join them in protecting and preserving our Earth.

Here, we pass them on to you:

"Right now I use a reusable bag 80 percent of the time when I shop. This month and from now on I am committed to making it 100 percent of the time." - Janna Bills, 8th grade teacher Kapolei Intermediate School

"I am eliminating disposable plastic from my life starting with grocery bags and packaging." -Terry O'Quinn, Actor- star of Lost television series

"For Earth Day I am getting a worm bin for composting all of my organic waste. I plan to use the compost for my new herb garden." Iradj Stroble, Naval Officer, Pearl Harbor

"I am going to clebrate Earth Day with my son's preschool class. We are going to read 'Recycle every day!' by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace and 'Why should I recycle' by Jen Green and then play a recycling game where we identify which trash items can be recycled." -Anne Geertman, parent

"I'll be at UHM's Sustainability Fest and Kokua Festival sharing what we've learned with our sustainability projects at UHM's campus and learning from the community." - Shanah Trevenna, Student Sustainability Coordinator for Sustainable Saunders at UHM

Representative Marilyn Lee of Millilani will spend Earth Day "planting more trees my yard" and resolves to make this the year to "use fewer plastic bottles".

"At work we recycle cans and bottles but too much paper gets thrown in the trash. For Earth Day I am creating recycling bins for waste paper where I work. (The National Marine Fisheries offices at Kewalo Basin)"-Brian Zgliczynski, Marine Biologist with the Coral Reef Ecosystem Division of NMFS

"This year for Earth Day, I will be meeting with the public to share the mission behind my artwork at an art show in Lahaina, Maui. The mission behind my artwork is about reminding people that we are one with nature and humans are organic beings dependent on the preservation of Mother Earth. It is my hope that sharing my artwork and my thoughts will inspire people to take greater care of our earth and our connections with it." - Carolyn Quan, Fine ArtPhoto Collage Artist

If you have been inspired let us know and tell the world. Together, in one year, we can easily divert over 2.5 million pounds of trash from our landfills and oceans just by recycling plastic, paper, glass and cans at home. Olin Lagon and the Kanu Hawai'i team will be at the Kokua Festival this year asking people to make specific pledges to recycle, conserve energy and conserve water. Their goal is to get 5,000 people make commitments to change they will carry out for the entire year. Visit them at their booth a www.kanuhawaii.org the Kokua Festival this weekend or online at www.kanuhawaii.org to make a commitment to our environment this Earth Day!
